The stopped clock

Andrea’s only timepiece is a clock that’s fixed to the wall. One day she forgets to wind it and it stops.

She travels across town to have dinner with a friend whose own clock is always correct. When she returns home, she makes a simple calculation and sets her own clock accurately.

How does she manage this without knowing the travel time between her house and her friend’s?

Set it to some time and wind it up so that it starts running. Note the time (T1) and leave. Check time (t1) when you reach the friend. Spend some time there and check time (t2) again when leaving. On reaching home, check the time (T2) on the faulty clock again.
This means if it takes x amount of time on the way to your friend, then

T2 = T1 + 2x + t2 - t1

This can easily be solved for x.

So the correct time T2 will be calculated as t2 + x
