3 Glasses!

There are 3 glasses. The biggest one can hold 24 ounces. The medium one can hold 11 ounces and the smallest one can hold 5 ounces.

Now you have 24 ounces of soft drink in the largest glass.

Can you use just these 3 glasses to make the largest glass contain 12 ounces of soft drink by pouring soft drink from one glass to another?

Can we pour out the unwanted water?
« #8 : September 08, 2007, 10:14:35 PM From PSM»

it can be done without pouring out also...
« #9 : September 08, 2007, 11:03:06 PM From Poonam»

If wasting of water is allowed then we can get 12 ounces of water in lesser than 7 steps. Do post the answer for this also if you have solved.

« #10 : September 08, 2007, 11:30:37 PM From PSM»

i dont think it can be done unless u dont count throughing water as 1 step

Solution if pouring out can be used

1)Fill the 11 ounce glass first and then pour it out

Now there is 13 in the first glass

2)Again fill the 11 ounce glass. Now do not pour it out

Now there is 2 ounce in the first glass

3)pour 5 ounce from 11 to 5 ounce glass and transfer it to the first glass

Now there is 7 ounces in first glass and 6 in the second glass

4)pour 5 again in the 5 ounce glass and transfer it to the first glass

Now there will be 12 ounces in the first glass.

as i said it is also taking 7 steps if u count throughing water out also as one of the steps...
but if u dont take it as one then it is taking 6..

hello to all.
i have recently joined this site.
this is my ans---
1)fille the 11 ounce glass first and pout it to 5 ounce glass
now 11 ounce glass is having 6 ounce drink
2)pour the 5 once glass drink in 24 ounce glass
3)fill the 5 ounce glass from the remaining 6 ounce drink from 11 ounce glass.
now 11 ounce glass is having 1 ounce drink
4) pour the 5 ounce glass drink in to 24 ounce glass
5) pour the remaining 1 ounce dring into 5 ounce glass
6) and finally fill the 11 ounce glass with drink.
now 24 ounce glass is having 12 ounce drink. coz remaining 11 ounce is in second glass and one ounce is in 5 ounce glass
