Change the labels!

You have three baskets, one labeled "oranges" one labeled "apples" and one labeled "apples & oranges" and you know that all the labels are incorrect.

You have to change the labels of the buckets to its actual content without looking into the contents of the buckets. Is it possible?

If not, then how many items and from which baskets must you choose to properly label all three baskets?

yes ofcourse by touching it..oranges will be sort of shrunken..but apples are not.. ;)

Hey preeps, the question says "without looking into the contents". You cannot even touch or ask someone else!
The solution is logical.  :)

As you know that all the labels are incorrect...
say take A B C
change it to A C B then B C A.
i think this logic will work..im not sure   >:(

Shall we take any one sample from them?
I mean by taking a sample from them,we can make sure that we can fit the labels.

hey..this is not possible since we won't get a unique answer...lets assume A contains APPLE B contains APPLES and ORANGES and C contains ORANGES...now without looking we can arrange that in two possible ways but oonly one of them will be the right answer:
     A                         B                           C
Oranges                Apples           Apples and Oranges

            A                              B                           C
Apples and Oranges          Oranges                 Apples

Only one of them is correct...
( If i m not missing nething?? )

Hey thanks Ashutosh for the insight. Even I realize that it is not possible to find out the correct labels without looking into the contents.

So the question now is...
How many items and from which baskets must you choose to properly label all three baskets?

Apologies to those who have tried... Request them to try out with the modified question.

Ya we can solve it
Says the bucket are A-apple, B-apple & orange and C-orange. The questions says all mark are incorrect.
Now take out a sample from bucket B
Now suppose its apple. Then the solution is
B-apple. ( our assumption B contains both but contains either orange or apple )
A-orange ( because C do not have orange )

Same way it can be solved for sample outcome orange.

Surender, your solution isn't right.
B might contain "Apples and Oranges". Hence it is not possible to figure out which label should be put on basket B by taking out just one fruit from it.

I think,Surender is on right track.
Let the baskets be a-apple,b-orange,c-apple and orange.
Let the labeling is not right.
Lets take a sample from each basket.Let the possibilities be:
case 1:
Getting orange from a,apple from b and apple from c.
Since "c" is wrong,it cant be apple&orange. We get an apple from c and so it must be the basket containing apple.Hence the other ones can be easily determined
case 2:
Getting orange from a,apple from b and orange from c.
Same procedure guys.
It is from the question that all the three are wrong. So these are the possibilities.
So we need to choose one item in each basket to correct them.

Hope i am right.
If not notify please

Spazinvader, you are right. But just optimize it. You need to get the least number of fruits and from least number of baskets.
« #12 : July 21, 2007, 11:50:01 PM From spazinvader»

We could do it by choosing 2 fruits from 2 buckets.
It is enough.I think so.
« #13 : July 22, 2007, 12:11:55 AM From Poonam»

There is a shorter way  :)
« #14 : August 11, 2007, 09:34:12 PM From spazinvader»

We can make it by taking one from the apples & oranges bucket.
This could do it.
Am i right?

u need to take only one fruit from the basket labled Apple and Orange

if its an apple label it correctly as apple and for the remaining baskets(since its wrongly labled) u can name the orange basket as Apple and Orange and the remaining Apple basket as Orange basket

Hey Spazinvader and Arun Srikanth, you both are absolutely right.
