Find the time to fill the tank!

First tap can fill the tank in 4 hours. Second tap can fill the tank in 2 hours. Third tap can empty the tank in 8 hours. If all the taps are operational at the same time, how long will it take to fill the tank?

Even I agree. 1 hour 36 minutes.

Total speed at which the tank is filling up is x/4 + x/2 - x/8

where x is the volume of the water the tank can hold.
(Adding the speed which will increase the speed and subtracting which will slow down)

(Total Speed) = (Distance or Volume)/Time
Time = (Volume)/Speed
Time = x/(x/4 + x/2 - x/8)

1.6hrs

1 hour and 36 mins...

portion of tank filled in one hr = 1/4 + 1/2 - 1/8
                                           = 5/8

hence time to fill tank = 8/5 hrs

Simple enough!
